Major Contract for Ampegon at FAIR Research Project

Turgi, Switzerland, February 24, 2015. Ampegon has received another major contract for an accelerator system at the FAIR heavy ion synchrotron in cooperation with Research Instruments (RI) GmbH. The companies are two of the core suppliers for the acceleration system which is designed to answer fundamental questions of the evolution of the universe.

Ampegon has a long track record of successful installations in the scientific world. The company has already delivered similar equipment to GSI (where FAIR will be constructed), CERN, DESY and many others. Ampegon is also one of the technology partners of the ITER project. In addition high voltage power supplies or amplifiers for major plasma heating systems (ECRH, ICRH and NBI) have been developed for various fusion research facilities worldwide.

The accelerator system to be supplied for FAIR has to produce at least 280 kV acceleration voltage. The high voltage system consists of fourteen identical RF stations tunable in the range from 1.1 to 3.2 MHz. This ensures acceleration of particles starting from protons up to uranium ions and to perform necessary beam manipulations. After delivery of the last unit experiments will start in the beginning of 2018.

FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe) in Darmstadt, Germany will be a host laboratory for basic research to about 3000 scientists from 50 countries, the estimated costs of 1.6 billion Euro are mostly financed by the German government. The double ring accelerator with a circumference of 1100 meters will be associated with a complex system of cooler and storage rings. The synchrotron will deliver ion beams of unprecedented intensities and energies.
