Isolated DC/DC converters, also popularly known as solid-state DC transformers, are key parts of DC transmission and DC grid infrastructure. Employing efficient power semiconductor switches operating at higher switching frequency, and therefore utilizing significantly smaller transformers, these DC/DC converters promise improvements in efficiency and power density over older technologies.

To address the demand for such medium voltage DC/DC converters for integrating in DC transmission systems, Ampegon has developed modular DC/DC power converters with latest generation wide bandgap power semiconductor switches and medium frequency transformers. These are especially useful for stepping-up DC voltage to feed DC transmission lines, powering remote vehicles, and integrating renewable sources into DC grids, etc.

With a nominal isolation voltage of 4kVDC, and scalable operating current and voltage, up to 50kW power can be delivered using each Ampegon DC/DC converter unit. Featuring bidirectional power flow capability, these DC/DC converters can be used at both ends of long DC transmission cables to step-up the voltage and minimize the losses encountered from the transmission lines. Additional power can be achieved by stacking units in parallel.
